In the second half of the 19th Century Baron Christian von Berckheim, whose family had bought Weinheim castle in 1837, began collecting seedlings of exotic trees from all around the world and brought them to Weinheim. The trees were planted in the castle park and the adjoining forest, creating the largest exotic arboretum in Europe.
